This garden has been nationally designated as a Site of Scenic Beauty; it makes great use of Mt. Nosaka, a symbol of Tsuruga, creating a calm, peaceful atmosphere with simple, old-fashioned Shoin-zukuri architecture.

Shibata Garden is also known by the name “Kantoen Garden,” named after an old Chinese legend titled “the Love of Kanto” about a benevolent ruler. Based on this legend, they planted a Japanese bayberry tree (known as “the kanto tree”) to the west of the residence. Near the bayberry tree, there is a large old camphor tree (or kusunoki in Japanese). This is believed to be due to the Japanese name of the tree, as the Shibata Clan claimed to be descendants of Kusunoki Masashige. Additionally, there is a Japanese bayberry tree in the garden of the Nosaka Shibata family, the head family of the Shibata Clan, and this tree has also been designated by the city as a natural monument.
