This 25-hectare inland low moor wetland, surrounded by three low mountains, is home to a unique community of plants and a large variety of aquatic insects: some 70 species of dragonflies alone have been identified so far. At the onsite visitors’ center, visitors can see what Nakaikemi-shicchi Wetland looked like long ago, and learn about the plants and animals that live there. Nakaikemi-shicchi Wetland is beautiful through all four seasons, with its wide variety of plants and animals: roughly 3,000 different rare species, 80 of which are endangered. In 2012, it was registered as a Ramsar Site. In addition to the preservation of the wetland environment, the wet-rice cultivation environment first set up during the Edo era (1603–1868) is kept maintained, and visitors can learn about this at the Nakaikemi Harmony of Rural Nature and Human Life visitors’ center.
