Genbao Fort was built in the year 1583 on the peak of Mt. Uchinakao, 460 meters above sea level, at the eastern end of Tsuruga, on the prefectural border between Fukui and Shiga, as the headquarters for Shibata Katsuie’s troops for the Battle of Shizugatake. The fort was built with exclusively defensive intentions, centering around the main compound in the highest location; however, it was also cleverly designed to be possible to use the fort as a base for aggressive operations. Genbao Fort was built with features necessary for both offense and defense, such as appropriately positioned compounds with specialized functions, an exceptionally complete umadashi barrier, a dry moat, highly advanced earthworks, and a fort tower base, and is considered the most structurally developed mountain fort still remaining in Fukui, and has been designated as a national historic site.
